2022 COALITION FOR A JUST HAMILTON COUNTY ESSAY APPLICATION

In 2010, Judge Tracie M. Hunter became the first African-American to be elected Judge of the Hamilton County Juvenile Court, but she had to file a lawsuit and fight her case for nearly two years to force votes to be counted to prove she won the election. Her lawsuit Hunter V. Hamilton County Board of Elections changed election laws to ensure that provisional ballots cast in the right polling place are counted in all future elections.  Her fight continued on the bench and for the past 12 years, Judge Hunter has fought publicly for justice and voting rights in Hamilton County, OH.  To increase awareness of justice and voting concerns in Hamilton County, the CFAJHC is announcing the “2022 Judge Tracie M. Hunter Essay Contest.”  The winner{s) of this contest will receive a $500 scholarship to further their college education.

Essay Criteria:

• Essay topic: “How do you plan to impact the justice and voting system in Hamilton County?”
• Essay must be between 200 words and 800 words in length.
  • All essays must be submitted typed and double-spaced (12 pt font - Times New Roman Typeface).
• Essay must be solely the work of the entrant. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.
• Upload completed application at the end of this form:

• Essay must be received by May 30, 2022, no later than 11:59 PM, EST.

Scholarship Award:

• A $500 scholarship will be awarded to each winning entrant.
• At least two scholarships will be awarded.

Applicant Criteria:

• The contest is open to any graduating senior currently enrolled in a Hamilton County, OH, high school, college freshman, or sophomore residents of Hamilton County, OH.
• Student must show proof of enrollment to receive the scholarship. A letter from a counselor, principal, or a teacher on school letterhead should suffice as proof for high school students.
• Only one entry per student.

Judging Criteria:

• Essays will be judged on both style and content. Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate, grammatically correct, and logically organized.
• Decisions of the judges are FINAL.
• CFAJHC members and their immediate family members are not eligible for this contest.
• All entries become the property of CFAJHC and will not be returned.
• CFAJHC reserves the right to post essay submissions on its website and use the essay in communications and any other news or social media.
• The winner(s) and all other participants will be notified via e-mail and/or phone by

June 30, 2022.

NOTE:  The winner(s) is required to acknowledge, in writing, receipt of the scholarship.
